Science Trick #1: Un-Weight the Bat

Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth swung a 42-52 ounce bat throughout his career. Along with The Babe's own body mass and strength, a heavier bat added even more mass to his energy potential. So when he got moving, he was able to transfer a lot of moving energy into the incoming pitch.

Transferring energy from a body at rest (potential energy) to forward movement (kinetic energy) is called the Conservation of Linear Momentum.  It's a clever trick MLB small-boppers like 5-Time All-Star Robinson Cano and 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen use to initiate a friction-free swing. This makes a hitter:

  • Feel lighter when swinging a bat,
  • Have the ability to make a faster turn,
  • Make a more controlled aggressive move towards the pitcher, and
  • Look like a projectile missile, than a bump on a log ("Sit back" mentality)...

 

Science refers to this transfer of energy as the Un-Weighting Principle…

Pick up a twenty-five pound dumbbell, stand tall, and with a straight arm raise the dumbbell out in front of you.

Science Trick #2: The Science of Turning Faster

A PBS.org article compares the Conservation of Angular Momentum (CAM) to Circus Trapeze Artists.  In the article it says:

“Ever notice how flying acrobats, gymnasts, ice-skaters and half-pipe snowboarders, tuck in their arms and scrunch up their bodies while spinning in the air? By keeping their arms and legs tucked close to their centers of mass, they are able to rotate faster. This is because, just like linear momentum, the momentum of rotation, called angular momentum, is also conserved. Angular momentum depends on the speed of rotation and the distribution of weight from the center of mass.”

Take Adelina Sotnikova as an example, the controversial gold medal winner in the 2014 Winter Olympics. After leaving contact with the ice - in order to complete four tight turns in mid-air - she has to pull her arms and legs tightly into her center line. And when she returns from her jump, you'll see her spread her arms and legs out to slow down or stop her rotation.

When she wants to slow her spin down, she extends her arms and legs.  Doing this increases the size of her moving mass, and decreases her angular velocity.

Forward movement energy (Science Trick #1) will get transferred into what science calls Conserving Angular Momentum.

This is where Ken Griffey Jr., or even today's Bryce Harper, arm barring out before their turns set a bad example for those wanting a faster turn. Arm barring is ONLY okay in the contact zone for pitch adjustments. I know, this will upset a lot of people. But these are proven human movement rules here. The science of turning faster isn't a theory. It's a proven reality.

Just like we've accepted jumping out of an airplane with a parachute on your back, you know gravity is going to pull you down...100% of the time, as long as you're on earth.

Science Trick #3: The Spine Engine

In an article titled, "The Coupled Motion of the Spine," PhD. Serge Gracovetsky (Physicist, Electrical Engineer, and best known for his work on Spine Engine mechanics) talks about how human movement has historically been described as the “passenger” upper body, the lower half being responsible for "locomotion", and the spine typically being explained away as irrelevant to human movement.

Take this human movement study…

Scientists studied the gait (walking motion) of a human quadriplegic (no legs at all, he actually moved from bottom of his pelvis – see Fig.5 picture above).  Here's what they found:

"Motion analysis of the spine demonstrated normal spinal movement, save for an enhanced axial rotation, due to the desire to maintain a near-normal horizontal velocity (translation: forward movement). The gait is so perfect that, by hiding the bottom of his pelvis from view, it is not possible to guess this man has no legs."

You see, the body's locomotion depends primarily on the spine.  Dr. Gracovetsky says there are three spinal movements:

  1. Extension (or Lordosis)/Flexion - think of the first as arching or extending the back, and the second like doing a crunch.
  2. Side Bending - this would be standing tall, then bending sideways at the waist.  And,
  3. Axial Rotation - twisting movement.

Dr. Gracovetsky says that if two of the above are present, then most always the third is the end result. 

As a hitter, we need to understand number two initiates number three, and during the swing we get number one. The spine is the driver of ALL possible human movements. 

People don't realize there's human machinery hidden deep within the body that is quietly driving the small-boppers’ fiction-free swing.

Next, we’re going to discuss how important it is to keep head-spine alignment. If not, then misalignment can have the major potential to decrease a hitter’s force production…

Science Trick #4: Head Spine Alignment

In dynamic movements, like a baseball or softball swing, keeping head-spine alignment is crucial for finishing the energy (or force) transfer from body...to barrel...to ball.

Albert Einstein once said that:

"Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. It can only be transferred from one form into another."

ALL small-boppers - with high OPS - use their spine in a way that truly achieves friction-free hitting.  Even if we sequence spine movement properly, we still could be bleeding a tremendous amount of force at impact (See following Andrew McCutchen video).

As Physical Therapist, video blog author of MobilityWod.com and the book Becoming a Supple Leopard: The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Pain, Preventing Injury, and Optimizing Athletic Performance, Dr. Kelly Starrett says,

“The spine has major potential to decrease your force production.”

Dr. Starrett calls this “losing spinal integrity,” and further explains:

“Hinging at one of the segments [vertebraes in the neck]…when we put a hinge across the central nervous system, the body recognizes that as a primary insult, or threat to the body, because you’re basically guillotining or kinking the nervous system.  You’ve kinked ‘the tube’, so it [force production] just drops off.”

Notice how 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen was doing the same thing and ACTUALLY LOSING force production this past year (scary to think with the numbers he put up)...

On the other side of the coin, look at how the fastest sprinters in the world, Usain Bolt, keeps his spinal integrity by using his eyes to look ahead instead of tilting his head back, like most slower athletes may do…

Science Trick #5: Loading the Body like a Spring

Most coaches, when asked how to train power, would say:

  1. "Walking away from the hands" like Ken Griffey Jr. did, or
  2. Turn the pelvis inward towards the catcher, and land with a closed front toe.

Both couldn't be further from reality.

The body is loaded with opposing tension and compression forces.  These “springy forces” are internal, and NOT a segmenting of the body – via the pelvis or hips. 

According to Dr. Erik Dalton in his collaborative book Dynamic Body,

“Modern Science reveals the brain does not recognize individual muscle activities due to lack of practical purpose.”  In motor learning of an athletic skill, such as a swing, the muscles develop a pattern after repeated physical motion.  This pattern becomes ingrained in the brain so that, at any given time, the motion and mechanics of the swing can be recalled with success.”

According to Thomas Myers in his book Anatomy Trains, the secret to consistent power actually lies in springy connective tissue called Fascia...
  • Cotton candy or spider web-like material,
  • The bones and muscles float in it, and it gives muscles their shape,
  • Is made up of mostly stiff collagen...which to the body, is like steel to the building industry,
  • Compression and tension forces are acting within the body at all times, and
  • Compressing the spring happens in an "X" pattern across the front and back of the torso.
I call it the Catapult Loading System. Here's a powerful example in the animal kingdom... 

According to a Review by Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B 120 (1998) 41–49, titled: “Energetics and biomechanics of locomotion by red kangaroos (Macropus rufus)” by Rodger Kram, and Terence J. Dawson, the Abstract states:

“As red kangaroos hop faster over level ground, their rate of oxygen consumption (indicating metabolic energy consumption) remains nearly the same.  This phenomenon has been attributed to exceptional elastic energy storage and recovery via long compliant tendons in the legs.”

Most coaches think explosive rotational power is driven primarily by muscle. 

Not true.

It is a combination of conserving and transferring linear into angular momentum, spine engine mechanics, and Tensegrity forces that give a friction-free swinging small-bopper a LARGE advantage at the plate.

Greek PLUS Bull EQUALS Friction-Free Swing

There was a Greek man in the sixth century B.C. who became a legendary six-time gold medal Olympian wrestler.  His name was Milo, and was well known for his fantastic feats of strength.  He lived in Croton, a city in southern Italy.

However, Milo wasn’t born a six-time Olympian...

He knew from a young age that he wanted to be a world champion wrestler, but in order to get there he’d have to get bigger and stronger than any opponent he’d ever have to face. 

Every morning Milo would borrow his neighbor’s young male calf, put him on his back, and carry him to town and back while he fetched milk for his family. 

Every morning of every day Milo did this.  As the calf ate and grew bigger, so did Milo.  You see, as the calf’s weight steadily increased, it put a slow and steady weight bearing burden on Milo’s body.  After some time the calf grew into an adolescent bull and weighed over a thousand pounds!  Just think how much stronger Milo got =-0

Over time, the small progressive changes in the bull’s weight didn’t seem like much to Milo.  He was benefiting from a little known scientific rule known as Specificity, or better known as the SAID Principle.

The SAID Principle stands for Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands.  As Dr. W. Eric Cobb, the founder of Z-Health Performance simply puts it,

"The body ALWAYS improves at EXACTLY what we practice.” 

It was my discovery and understanding of SAID, and other important human movement PRINCIPLES that opened my eyes to seeing hitters in ALL NEW vibrant colors, and training them accordingly.

I played four years of division one baseball at Fresno State from 2000-2003. The stats I accumulated over four years were subpar: .250 AVG, 9 homers, and 40 RBI’s…not exactly professional caliber.

I tell my students that I hit Down & Through before I knew The Truth, and that those old rickety mechanics were my limiting ceiling through college.

I also read - A LOT - about experts in the field of human bio-mechanics…it’s a passionate curiosity I have…but my wife refers to it as a curse.

To be an effective coach or instructor, you have to be willing to swallow your pride in the learning process.  I had to swallow mine – many times - after coming to the realization that teaching old-and-tired Down & Through mechanics wasn’t practical because they were the same old rickety movements that contributed to my subpar college career.

The problem is some coaches gloat that they have 30+ years of coaching experience, but what they really have is one year of coaching experience over thirty years.  They teach the same flimsy knowledge – not backed by science - that’s been passed down through the generations.

This is like trying to play Monopoly without knowing the rules, and this my friend is what 99.9% of so-called experts are doing…they’re just guessing.  They have this drill and that drill with no proven scientific knowledge of the true PRINCIPLES to explosive rotational power.  There are human movement laws EVERY athlete must abide by for fiction-free explosive power.

Principles are few, and methods are many.

THREE Reasons the Hitting Industry is FAILING…

Here they are:

  1. Conventional baseball/softball wisdom isn’t backed by proven Science,
  2. High level players and coaches can’t internalize what they’ve externalized, and
  3. Expert knowledge shared isn’t comprehensible to learners.

Has anyone ever stopped to look outside of baseball and softball circles to see how other explosive rotational athletes are moving? Does anyone really dig into primal movement patterns to reveal truths about human locomotion?

High level players and coaches can’t internalize what they’ve externalized

The truth is high level players and coaches “can’t teach” what they “can do”.  Think about your best teachers…

Stephen Hawking, a world leader on black holes, has never been to outer space…Bill Belichick never played in the NFL…Idan Ravin works with Chris Paul, Lebron James, and Carmelo Anthony on basketball skill training, and he’s never even played COLLEGE ball…Rudy Jaramillo, one of the top hitting coaches in the Bigs ever – has no MLB playing experience…Dave Duncan, widely considered one of the best pitching coaches ever – was a catcher.

Expert Knowledge Shared isn’t Comprehensible to Learners

By “learners” I mean the end user…the player, the coach, and/or the parent. 
There are three BIG ingredients to effective coaching:

  1. Having the right fundamental knowledge to teach (PRINCIPLES first, methods second),
  2. Making coaching sticky (comprehensible to learners), and
  3. Follow through (accountability, feedback, and repetitions).

There’s a major distance between what experts say and what the young hitter understands. This leaves a heavy burden on the parent, coach, or instructor to translate the white noise.

People often ask what makes The Truth About Explosive Rotational Power course different, and I answer with the three points we just discussed:

  1. We back our information with proven human movement Science (the PRINCIPLES),
  2. We put our focus on the internalization process (how-to make PRINCIPLES sticky using refined coaching cues), and
  3. Do our best to make information comprehensible to learners (the hitter) by relying heavily on feedback indicators that keep the hitter on track.

What You Study is More Important than How You Study

People get so numb watching millions of hours of slow motion hitting footage, that they lose sight of the forest for the trees.  They don’t focus on doing the right things, and then doing “those things” right. 

First of all, don’t waste your time looking at big-guys like Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols.  If anyone can get away with bad mechanics, they will. 

Who do you study then?

You look for the small-boppers and OPS, or On-Base PLUS Slugging Percentage.  To give you an idea, according to Wikipedia, in 2008, the average OPS for all players was .749. 

The following player stats came from Baseball-Reference.com:

  • Jose Bautista (6’0”, 190lbs) – average OPS over ten years is .849.
  • Andrew McCutchen (5’10”, 185lbs) – his average OPS over five years is .869, by the way “Cutch” won the 2013 NL MVP.
  • Robinson Cano (6’0”, 210lbs) – his average OPS over nine years is .860
  • David Wright (6’0”, 210lbs) – his average OPS over ten years is .888.
  • Hank Aaron (6’0”, 180lbs) – his average OPS over twenty-three years is .928…and by the way “The Hammer” is ranked second all-time with 755 career MLB home-runs.
  • Sadaharu Oh (5’10”, 175lbs) – first all-time in Japanese Baseball with 868 career home-runs. 
  • Mickey Mantle (5’11” 195lbs) – his average OPS over eighteen seasons is .977…and by the way, “The Mick” has the longest home-runs officially recorded on record…multiple times, in multiple ballparks.  AND, he played most of his career injured. 

The point is, it doesn’t matter if you’re big or small.  The only prerequisite to following human movement PRINCIPLES is being, well, human.

What do all these small-boppers have in common?

Study the Highest Frequency Materials (PRINCIPLES) that transfer to any Explosive Rotational Athlete

There are certain things – bio-mechanically speaking – that small-boppers are consistently doing that other explosive rotational power athletes are doing as well (here are THREE):

  • Setting up and finishing in a strong and stable position because as Dr. Gray Cook of the Functional Muscle Screen (FMS) says, “You can’t fire a canon from a canoe”,
  • Cleverly combating the forces of gravity, and
  • Using their spine as THE engine to a friction-free swing.

The test is to see if these PRINCIPLES frequently show up in other explosive rotational athletes, such as: Olympic Shot Putters, Javelin, Hammer, and Discus Throwers…Golfers and Lacrosse players…Gymnasts and Trapeze Artists…

Sure, each explosive rotational movement “gets it done” a little differently, but one thing’s for sure, these athletes are ALL adhering to the same human movement laws that Milo from Croton did to become a six-time world wrestling champion.

Effectiveness is Doing the Right Things & Efficiency is Doing “Those Things” Right

Instead of solely looking baseball and softball, we need to force ourselves outside the sport, study how other coaching PRINCIPLES are being taught effectively, and find the common ground.

Frequently Asked Questions…

Q: How long does it take on average for players to learn this swing?

A: According to my students, it takes the average Little Leaguer 4-8 weeks to get the footwork down. It all depends on if they practice every day at home.  Remember, coaching is THREE things: 1) Teaching the right fundamentals, 2) Making the knowledge being taught sticky, and 3) Coaching follow through.

Q: My clients’ parents want fast results but it takes time to apply the principles.

A. All parents want fast results, it’s human nature. But some are open to taking time for proper Neuromuscular development.  According to the bestselling book The Talent Code, Daniel Coyle says the struggle isn’t an option, it’s a biological requirement.  Parents have to understand this, and have to realize they’re responsibility is based on number three above: Coaching follow through.  Parents expect their kids to get better with just three days of practice per week…but science says this is near impossible.

Q: Do you use Cevellos' heavy bat to help teach the un-weighting principle?

A. Short answer, not anymore.  There are better alternatives on the market with the convenience of more model variety.  You’ll learn how powerful the un-weighting principle is and how-to build it into a future friction-free swing.  I even do a demo of the un-weighting principle and it’ll really open your eyes!

Q: What do you tell the parents about stride vs leg lift?

A:  I tell them it’s all about personal preference.  Small-boppers in the Big Leagues use the stride for timing...Cano uses a slide step, whereas Bautista uses a leg kick. Push whatever the hitter is comfortable doing.  Just note that a leg lift requires the Float to happen sooner, and last longer than a Cano slide step.

Q: How effective are these principles in slo-pitch softball where the player must generate almost all of the power?

A:  It's even more critical that you use these principles in slow pitch softball. You still have to conserve linear (forward) into angular (rotational) momentum like any other explosive rotational athlete does.  The barrel plane is the only difference if you’re playing a ten-foot pitch arc.  You’ll learn a lot from The Truth Course and it’ll translate into more consistent power on the field.

Q: Is 7yrs old too young to teach this style of hitting?

A: Nope. 7-years-old is the youngest I teach this swing to. Now, the speed at which they grasp the movements may take longer than say a 12yo. But just have patience with them...just the fact you’re teaching the friction-free swing to them early will pay dividends when they get to the big field.

Q: Without going into my background I will say I have too found the more important part of the swing is the proper load and momentum built to turn on ball. As a kid we were taught slow feet quick hands. Timing?

A: Yes, and timing is VERY important. Think of linear and angular momentum as making the Final Turn feel lighter. A hitter becomes a projectile missile versus a bump on a log...think of the broad jump versus the triple jump in the Olympics.  I go into quite a bit of detail on how-to calibrate timing in The Truth course.

Q: My kid does not get his front heel down throughout the whole swing process; will this program help him with this?

A: Yes it will. He'll be putting more weight on the stride leg initially, so it'll feel more natural to him to put the heel down.  Getting the front heel is crucial to getting the timing signal to the front hip to open.  If the pelvis doesn’t get that signal, or it’s muted, then we also don’t allow the signal to continue up the spine into the shoulders telling them to counter-rotate the pelvis…like when we walk, opposite leg and arm come forward.  Again, the course will help with this.

Q: I've always disliked e-books and pdfs, and I access internet by phone and nook.  So even smaller print.  My question is, is The Truth compatible with mobile devices and am I going to be straining to read a bunch of pdf’s?

A: The Truth course is made up of 100% mobile device compatible videos.  There are some PDF’s you can print out to take notes, but it isn’t required.

Q: I’ve also heard you say this helps correct arm barring, or hands first types of swing.  Is there evidence of this?

A: Yes, the Catapult Loading System helps with this.  Getting the shoulders into the right angle and the hands locked into the proper place engages The Spine Engine.  It will take time to un-learn a hands-first swing, but will pay off.  The Catapult Loading System helps with arm barring and bat drag without having to purchase a specific hitting aid.  For evidence on this, I’ll be periodically posting case studies of my students to HittingPerformanceLab.com, and you can see for yourself.

Q: I’ve heard you say this can help with lunging, is that true?

A: Yes this is true.  Lunging and hands-first swinging go hand-in-hand.  We’re taking the focus off the hands and putting it on the spine engine.  In a worst case scenario, if a hitter is out in front of a pitch using The Truth course information, then he or she will still have the Catapult Loading System to work for them.  Hank Aaron was out in front quite a bit during his career, but he did pretty well for himself I think because he used the PRINCIPLES we talk about in the Course.

Q: Does this apply to softball as well?

A: Yes it does!  All explosive rotational athletes NEED to abide by the same human movement PRINCIPLES.  These are the rules of the game for baseball as well as softball.  The only difference is Data Collection: Following the Pitch either over or under-hand.

Q: How is your system different than anybody else?
