Bat Drag Isn't a Hip Problem.
Stop Coaching Rotation and Fix It Fast.

Baseball · Softball · All Levels

Over-rotating the pelvis is one of the primary causes of bat drag โ€” not the cure. The CLS 3-Movement Fix addresses the actual root: an incomplete upper-body loading sequence. Here's the printable drill card that eliminates racing back elbow in as little as two weeks.

  • Showing the Numbers โ€” pre-load the spinal engine for +38 ft of batted ball distance (Zepp data)
  • Hiding the Hands โ€” rear scapula load that maximizes the Springy X fascial pattern
  • Finger Pressure โ€” the bat drag killer (top hand, 3 fingers, eliminates racing back elbow in ~2 weeks)
  • Deep Snap Drill โ€” the confirmation drill that exposes bat drag instantly
  • 3-week practice plan with reps, progressions, and game-transfer protocol
  • Works for baseball and softball, youth through collegiate

"I've coached hitters for 20+ years. I almost never tell a hitter to rotate the pelvis more. Most of the time I'm spending significant energy cutting DOWN on lower half rotation. The lower half is about directional force โ€” not spin."

Why "Rotate More" Makes Bat Drag Worse

Racing back elbow bat drag โ€” when the back elbow races past the hands before impact โ€” is caused by an incomplete upper-body loading sequence, not lazy hips. Here's what's actually happening.

The golf hook analogy: When a golfer over-rotates the lower body too aggressively, the result is a hook โ€” weak, off-center, pulling hard left. The fix isn't more rotation; it's slowing the lower body so the hands and clubface can catch up. The baseball swing follows the same physics. Over-rotating the pelvis disconnects the hands from the torso, the back elbow races the hands, and the barrel lags. That's bat drag โ€” caused by too much lower half spin, not too little.

The Problem
Upper Body Loading Sequence Isn't Completed

When Showing the Numbers, Hiding the Hands, and Finger Pressure aren't in place, the hitter has no spinal engine to unwind from. They compensate with excessive lower-half rotation โ€” which disconnects the hands from the torso and triggers the back elbow to race ahead.

The Result
Racing Back Elbow โ€” Weak Fly Balls + Pull-Side Grounders

The back elbow gets out in front of the hands, dropping the barrel too low. The hands overcorrect by rolling over. The outcomes are predictable: weak fly balls to the opposite field and ground balls to the pull side. More rotation makes both outcomes worse.

"The hips will automatically initiate their rotation at landing โ€” the body does it on its own. What matters is what happens in the upper body before that turn begins. That's where bat drag starts and where it gets fixed."

The 3 CLS Movements โ€” In Order

Each movement builds on the last. They work together to pre-load the spinal engine and connect the hands to the torso before the turn begins โ€” eliminating the need for the compensatory over-rotation that causes bat drag.

1
Showing the Numbers
Spinal Engine Pre-Load

The back of the jersey is visible to the pitcher at or near landing โ€” loading the spinal engine through pre-rotation and creating elastic energy that unwinds into the swing. The Break-It-Apart Drill teaches this: land with numbers showing, pause 1-2 seconds, then turn. Back Eye Test confirms depth: barely one eye visible = correct.

Hiding the Hands
Rear Scapula Load โ€” Springy X Pattern

At landing, the back elbow peeks out from behind the hitter's backside โ€” hands hidden from pitcher's view. This moves the back shoulder away from the front hip, lengthening the back leg of the Springy X fascial pattern. Showing Numbers shortens one leg. Hiding the Hands lengthens the other. Both are needed to maximize elastic tension.

The Bat Drag Killer โ€” Fascial Connection

Top hand only โ€” bottom three fingers (pinky, ring, middle) squeezed at 8/10 force starting when the stride foot lifts. Bottom hand uses butterfly grip. This activates the Front Arm fascial line, wiring the hands and bat into the turning torso. Two case studies: Jace (10yo, 60 lbs) and Zack (6'4" 8th grader) โ€” racing back elbow eliminated in 2 weeks and 1 session, respectively.

+ Deep Snap Confirmation Drill: Front arm to the rib wall, back arm bent at the rib cage, snap barrel across without shoulder rotation โ€” chest stays square. Instantly exposes racing back elbow. Includes three zone variations (pull, center, oppo) for complete bat path training. All in the drill card PDF.
